Woman journalist beaten by gendarmes in Guinea

Kounkou Mara, a journalist in a private media group Lynx-Lance, was beaten by Gendarmes on Monday in Conakry on her way to a demonstration organized by the Central Bank of the Republic of Guinea (BCRG), announced the media group on Tuesday.

According to her explanation to AFP, Ms. Mara visited the headquarters of the BCGR for a show on the 52nd anniversary of Guinea’s currency, the Guinean franc (GNF), which takes place on March 1st.

The Gendarmerie responsible for monitoring access to the bank had unwelcome verbal, one of them accusing his group of being “too critical and sometimes insolent.” After having insisted for entering the bank, a leader of the gendarmes ordered his men: “Get her out of here.” said the journalist Kounkou Mara.

“I was first shaken before one of them gives me a hit in the back, and I was then dragged along the ground. I wanted to defend myself by holding tight, another slapped me, and I fell to the on the ground, “she said, claiming to have had” minor injuries and bruises “in the face and shoulder.

The situation calmed down after the intervention of a bank official.

The aggression of Ms. Mara was confirmed to AFP by officials of his media group.

“We will not complain against the gendarmerie because we are afraid of reprisals,” the procedure “will not succeed and we risk being attacked,” said one director.
