Unsurprisingly, the uprisings and related stories from the Middle East and North Africa last year accounted for some of our best-read work in 2011. The developments in the region prompted IFEX to focus on writing more stories about how connected freedom of assembly is to free expression – especially when protest might be your main – or only – feasible form of dissent.
