Nigeria – Boko Haram militants threaten further attacks on media

Less than a week after bomb attacks on media houses killed at least eight in Abuja and Kaduna, the militant Islamic sect Boko Haram has released a video claiming responsibility and threatening further attacks against media groups, reports Media Rights Agenda (MRA).

Malaysia – Journalists targeted in rally for electoral reform

Security forces attacked both local and foreign journalists last week with tear gas and water cannons while cracking down on a rally for electoral reform in Kuala Lumpur, reports Malaysia’s Centre for Independent Journalism (CIJ), as well as international IFEX members.

Bahrain – Retrial announced for al-Khawaja and other activists

Bahrain has announced a retrial for hunger-striking political activist Abdulhadi al-Khawaja and 20 others accused of plotting against the state in the Arab Spring protests last year, report the Bahrain Center for Human Rights (BCHR), the Writers in Prison Committee (WiPC) of PEN International and Human Rights Watch. The IFEX members are disappointed that the activists remain in custody pending the retrial, and are calling for their immediate release.

Mexico – Another investigative journalist killed in Veracruz

2 May

A woman investigative journalist working for a prominent national news magazine was found beaten and strangled to death in her home in the Veracruz state capital of Xalapa on 28 April, report ARTICLE 19, the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ), the International Press Institute (IPI) and Reporters Without Borders (RSF).
